Being totally closed they were chiefly used by coffee collectors. As Brazil had a good population of coffee collectors, one manufacturer stared producing them in hundreds. Some 55 years after that, Japanese flip-flops inspired designers from Alpargatas plant to produce different version of the Japanese Zori’s sandals. But, there was a difference-it was made from rubber. Thus arrived on scene Havaiana, cheap, durable and comfortable.

In a matter of three years, it became popular and nearly a thousand pairs were being sold when other manufacturers started producing imitations of Havaianas sandals. In 1970,the original producers started a marketing campaign to distinguish their product from the imitations of their original product.


The company continued to grow till about early 90’s before facing another crisis. This time the original manufacturers introduced a single color sandal and labeled it as: Havaianas TOP. The marketing campaign launched for this new product was a great success and created history for Havaiana sandals, with upper class of consumers welcoming this new design. It came to be recognized as an exclusive product in the markets. A fresh marketing campaign followed to introduce the product to hitherto untapped segment of market. That gave it a further push.

At the time of World Soccer Cup, Havaianas Brazil was launched, followed by new designs and styles. The Havaianas sandal family continued to grow. Top models and celebrities started patronizing them, and nothing seemed to stop the growth of this company. Their exports continue to grow and the product finds place among the most advertised sandals in fashion magazines. You see them in the most sought-after display windows and they form a standard accessory for events of the kind of Sao Paulo fashion week.
